Earthly wisdom is unprofitable from an eternal perspective. Why? Because embedded within it is the corruption of man’s sinful nature. To embrace it as a guide in how to live one’s life is futile. James understands the distinction between wisdom of the earth in contrast to what comes from above. The central key is its source:
- Earthly wisdom originates from man and displays the characteristics of Satan.
- Heavenly wisdom originates from God and glorifies the characteristics of Christ.
James highlights the following attributes of man’s wisdom that is, “…earthly, unspiritual, demonic” (v15). It is greatly deceived by the enchantments of Satan and falls under his dominion (2 Cor 4:4). This is the primary reason we are exhorted to “ask of God,” for wisdom (Jam 1:5) and submit to what He says. If we are to prosper in Jesus, we are to place no trust in man’s wisdom or our own insight aside from the Holy Scriptures (Prv 3:5-8). James offers the reason why, by simply providing a contrasting description of God’s wisdom, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (v17). When obeyed, such wisdom distinguishes believers from unbelievers. When man embraces the gift of God’s wisdom, it will become evident to others that the peace of God rules his mind and temperament. The characteristics of a peace-loving, considerate and humble person will shine through in our words and actions. Such a person does not consider themselves above others and is quick to listen. The willingness to consider and receive correction will also mark such a person’s attitude. This is the disposition of a wise man (Prv 9:8-9). Further, a Christian’s actions will be full of mercy because they obey the command of Jesus to be merciful as we reciprocate the grace we have received from God.
Additionally, such a person becomes capable of exercising good judgement. Why? They are able to discern the will of God in all situations, thus, two of the descriptors of the Heavenly wisdom is impartiality and sincerity. Here is the key: When we have a higher view of God over ourselves, we shall be fruitful in obeying James instructions here. We must place much greater value on the Word of God than over the word of man. In doing so, we shall bear kingdom fruit in our lives to the glory of God, thus, “And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace” (v18). In other words, those who sow (cultivate) the wisdom of God into their lives will reap the peace of God and demonstrate the righteousness of Christ.
Let us embrace Heaven’s warning. True wisdom is not found in man. It is an exercise of futility to “search your own heart” for answers. For in the pit of the human heart, we shall only find darkness and deceit that ends in depression (cf., Jer 17:9). James’ exhortation is loud and clear. Trust not ourselves, for this is not the wisdom that comes from above. Instead, place your faith solely in our Father who is in Heaven. Amen.
