Focus Scripture: Psalm 84:1-4
In this passage of scripture, the psalmist express a deep and profound longing to be in the presence of God. He longs to go up to Jerusalem and worship God in the temple, but is unable to. Similarly, a Christian grows in desire to draw closer to God. Unlike in the Old Testament covenant, we do not have to travel to a special location to enjoy the presence of God (Jn 4:20-24). Further, the psalmist affection is not of the temple itself, but he loves God who revealed Himself there. Likewise, the true object of our devotion, praise, and worship is not in buildings, but in the True Living God, Himself. It is in fellowship with God we shall an experience a foretaste of true fulfillment that will be unending in heaven, where Christ is preparing a place for us (Jn 14:1-3). In this truth, we place our hope that helps us to endure and overcome the many trials of life today (Jn 16:33).
Do we understand that a desire for God leads us to pursue his presence? Can we see that an affection for this world and the things in it dull our longing for God?
