Longing for the Presence of God

“Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!”

Psalm 84:1-4

In this passage of scripture, the psalmist expresses a deep and profound longing to be in the presence of God. He yearns to go up to Jerusalem and worship God in the temple, but is unable to do so. Similarly, as Christians, we grow in our desire to draw closer to God. Unlike in the Old Testament covenant, we do not have to travel to a specific location to enjoy God’s presence (John 4:20-24).

Moreover, the psalmist’s affection is not for the temple itself; rather, he loves the God who revealed Himself there. Likewise, the proper object of our devotion, praise, and worship is not the buildings but the True Living God Himself.

It is in fellowship with God that we experience a foretaste of the true fulfillment that will be unending in heaven, where Christ is preparing a place for us (John 14:1-3). In this truth, we find hope that helps us endure and overcome the many trials of life today (John 16:33).

Do we understand that a desire for God leads us to pursue His presence? Can we see how an affection for this world and its distractions dulls our longing for God? May we bring these Spirit-led challenges to God in prayer, drawing us closer to Him and springing forth praise and worship in our lives. Amen.
