Tested Faith, Pt.2

Humility acknowledges our need for God. This is especially true as we navigate the trials and tribulations we endure in this fallen world. Unfortunately, there are times in our lives where we depend man’s wisdom instead of God’s. There are times we lean (trust) more in our own understanding. James cautions against this way of thinking, but instead exhorts, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God…” Why is it important that we seek God in all things? What role does faith have this process? How does doubt cause instability in our lives? James answers these questions in a way that remains helpful to the Christian today.

Why do we ask God for wisdom? Simply put, we lack it and he is the only one that has it. Remember, self-sufficiency and independence are natural inclinations associated with our human condition, like breathing air. We must first overcome our pride (which strengthens both) to embrace Gods’ view of man’s wisdom as Paul clearly taught, “For the wisdom of this world is folly with God…” (1 Cor 3:19). Human wisdom is contaminated with bitter jealousy and selfish ambition that is rooted in lies. James teaches that, “This is not the wisdom that comes from above, but is earthly, unspiritual and demonic” (Jam 3:15). In contrast, God’s wisdom is, “…first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and since” (Jam 3:17).

Here is some application of James teaching. When contemplating how to solve a problem or make decisions that impact our present and future, we need wisdom. The question is from who? Further, what is our desired outcome of such decisions? In other words, if we desire the glory of God, we seek him alone. But if we inquire of man, we receive a glory that fades like the flowers of grass that will ultimately not produce good in our lives. We need to challenge ourselves everyday with this question: Who do you trust more? Man’s way has a destructive end because its root is evil. God’s way is lifegiving because at his very core (and his entire being) he is perfect and pure. Hallelujah! Beloved, always ask of God. He never fails.
