The Sovereign Rule & Care of God

Focus Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34

In the midst of today’s pandemic crisis, there is much to be anxious about. The news media does little to help.  They tend to be purveyors and propagators of bad news and rumors. This produces fear in the hearts and mind of a person that intensifies apprehensions. With much going on in the world, it might seem that all hope is lost and God is not in control. My friend, this is simply a false narrative we have grabbed hold to and nurtured in our minds. This occurs when we take our eyes off Christ, and become too distracted by what is going on around us (Mt 14:22-33).

Trust Not Your Eyes

Jesus taught that we should not have an anxious heart. Why? If God cares for his creation such as the birds of the air, and the grass in the field, how much more does God care for us that are created in his image……thus providing for all our needs? When we yield to worry, it exposes weaknesses in our faith. To be clear, we will have worries and anxieties in this life, but the Bible commands that we cast our cares onto God (Phi 4:6-7, 1 Pt 5:6-7, Prv 12:25). In times like this, more resources (while needed and helpful in the due season) is not the foremost thing we lack. What we need is to be strengthened in faith that trusts in the goodness and sovereignty of God.

Trust in God who is Unseen

This provision is only available and accessible in the presence of God through Christ alone. Worrying deflects and blinds us from the wonderful grace and truth that God is in control. He knows our past, present and future (Isa 46:8-10). He is not shaken, nor is he surprised about the many trials and tribulation of our day. When we cast our cares on God, he frees and unburdens us by which we can find rest in him. In such a prayer, our attention is re-focused, clarity is provided, and we will be able to see our marvelous God who has already prepared for and knows our needs before we ask it of him.
